Remember, when you hiatus your character simply passes out in the gamebox world and wakes up in their own world. They will still remember the creepy place and the longer or more frequent you hiatus the more they'll begin to see elements of gamebox appearing in their own world. Villagers will be cared for in the hospital for the duration of the hiatus while outsiders will need to be looked after by their fellow outsiders.

If you drop, your character just disappears. Unless you're dropping because you killed them and in that case they're just dead. Easy, right?

To add your character to the list, please reply with the following and make sure to replace all caps with relevant info. Please include whether you're placing your character in the villager or outsider group in the subject line. When deciding on a role for a village character, pretty much anything is okay within reason. They can be a shopkeeper, bum, etc, but obviously there's no need for something like a physicist or professional lion tamer. It's a small village so some jobs (like doctor or teacher) will only require one character to fill the role. If any such job is ever taken I'll make a note of it here.

VILLAGERS

OUTSIDERS

The player cap is 15. We currently have 13 players.

premise

Characters in the gamebox will be divided into two main groups -- villagers and outsiders. Each group will present its own unique challenge, as follows:

Villagers

Villagers wake up in a simple hospital in a small village. There is no privacy -- just two rows of beds lining opposite sides of the room. A nurse moves from patient to patient, explaining what has happened.

The fog rolls in every night. Maybe you were out too late, she says, or maybe you didn't shut your bedroom window quite all the way, but somehow you were exposed to it. It causes vivid hallucinations to anyone it touches, weaving stories of entire lives that were never real. Sometimes people are so convinced by them that they go mad, and must be cast out of the village to fend for themselves.

The nurse reminds you of your duties within the village. She tells you about your life before. Maybe you're the village bum or you own a shop or you're the church priest. Whoever you are, you're given one day to recover from your experience and after that you're expected to forget about it and move on, returning to daily life. Anything else and the others might start to grow suspicious or even frightened of you. If you're not careful you could end up cast out of the village walls and into the wild.

Sometimes strange things happen in the village. Sometimes at night something scratches on the windows and doors. People even go missing from time to time but no one makes a big deal about it. Everyone is adamant that nothing truly odd ever happens in the village. It's perfectly normal as long as you avoid the fog.

Outsiders

The outsiders wake up in a village, too, but theirs is much different. The crumbling houses are in various states of disrepair, left to rot, but a closer look reveals this is more than a ghost town. There are bodies in the houses. They're old and rotting just like the buildings -- some are in beds, others lie on the floor, mutilated. Each house tells its own story, and each story is worse than the last.

There are some supplies to be salvaged. If you're lucky you'll find weapons and food. The houses may be full of horrors but they're the only shelter unless someone is willing to head into the woods and look for something else.

By dusk the temperature begins to drop and a heavy fog settles in. If you listen closely, you may hear whispers of people from your past. Anyone who remains outside will get the feeling that something is following them. The longer they stay out, the stronger the feeling grows until it's almost unbearable. What's worse is that you can't seem to make any progress traveling through the fog. Even if you walk a perfectly straight line, you get turned around every time and end up back in the decimated village. Apparently any travelling will have to be done by daylight.

The gamebox is a thing that is more lax than a game but a little bit stricter than a musebox. There are no apps and the activity check requires a player to simply provide a single thread per character from the month to show that they're still interested in playing. There will be occasional events and members are encouraged to contribute to plot ideas so we can meld this into something that we all enjoy.

The basic premise is that characters were brought here and split into two groups: the villagers and the outsiders. Villagers are expected to adjust to their "real lives" while struggling with the memories of these so-called hallucinations. Outsiders were dumped in the woods, forced to fend for themselves and scavenge to survive while dealing with whatever else lurks out there. Villagers are being convinced that the outsiders have lost their minds to the hallucinations and can't be trusted while outsiders are just trying to find a way home.

A character cap will be implemented, allowing two characters per player. It's recommended that, due to the close-knit nature of the game, if a player chooses to play two characters they place one in the villagers group and one in the outsiders group. A player cap is also going to be set at 12 to maintain a small community since this is meant to be casual place without much stress on tagging speed.

1. What kind of characters are allowed?

Any kind! Aliens, robots, vampires, werewolves, whatever! That said, all characters will be in a humanoid body upon arrival and any giant or miniature characters will find themselves to be roughly your average human size. Additionally, if a character who doesn't look human joins the villager group they will find that any and all native villagers will not acknowledge their appearance. It would seem that everyone sees them as a human and anyone who doesn't is obviously affected by the fog and needs to be dealt with, oops.

OCs are allowed. Canon OCs are not, however. Canon AUs and CRAUs are allowed. Only one version of each character is allowed, no doubles.

2. Can I app a dead character?

Of course! That said, characters who died in canon and appear in game will find that their death will still haunt them in some ways. For example, if your character was stabbed then they will have a scar where they were stabbed that will occasionally hurt as though they're being stabbed again. The pain will start out as a faint discomfort but as time goes on the frequency and intensity of the pain will increase. Characters who drowned might find themselves coughing up water. Someone who was suffocated might find themselves short of breath. Things of that nature.

Characters who were injured before arrival will behave in a similar manner. Think Inception. Your injury might not show up the deeper you go into ~the dream within a dream~ but you'll still kinda feel it.

3. Is there a character limit?

Yes. At the moment, each player is allowed two characters. It's encouraged that anyone who wishes to play two place one in the villagers group and one in the outsiders group as the gamebox isn't expected to be a super huge place.

4. Is there a network? Are there appliances?

No network. nope. Villagers will have very basic appliances  -- think 70s-era technology. There are stoves and indoor plumbing and stuff but no one's gonna be whipping out any magical iphones.

5. What happens if my character dies?

Death is permanent! If your character dies they're dead and no one else will be allowed to app them. This might seem harsh but this is a gamebox so we're allowed to do things like this.

6. What about powers and weapons?

Characters arrive without weapons but they will be able to salvage some if the look hard enough. Villagers won't really need weapons, at least not right away. Characters with supernatural powers/magical gifts/etc will find their abilities are extremely weak at first but those powers will grow stronger over time. Villagers are not encouraged to use any such powers as it will be seen as the character manifesting an intense hallucination from the fog. No good.

7. What about hiatuses? Anything special I should know?

When you hiatus, your character wakes up in their real world but still remembers the other place. The longer or more frequent your hiatuses are, the more they begin to see elements of the other world creeping into their own. In the gamebox world, they're out cold for the duration of the hiatus. In the village, they'll be taken to the hospital and cared for (better not go ranting about any hallucinations). Outside the village, they'd better hope their new comrades like them enough to lug their body around.

As with AC and stuff, hiatus rules are pretty lax but if you say you're gonna be gone for two weeks and then you're gone for a month or two, don't be shocked if you come back and your character's been axed.

These are pretty standard and everyone pretty much knows what's expected of them in games, museboxes, and so on, but:

1. Respect your fellow players. Be nice to each other. If there's a problem, try to handle it in a mature manner. If you don't think you can, take it to the mod.

2. Be active. This place was designed for people who just wanted a slow, small community to rp in but it won't work if we never post at all! So, do stuff. Post things. Have fun.

3. Try to stay in character. We aren't doing apps but that's not an excuse to suddenly play dark serious Joe Smith from xyz canon as a lighthearted funny guy.

4. Label your posts with appropriate warnings for gore, smut, etc.

5. Players are allowed two characters at a time. If they wish to drop a character and bring in a new one, however, that's fine.

And that's basically it. I mean, we all (probably) know each other and we all (probably) know how to conduct ourselves and I just want everyone to have a fun time. So let's do that.
